The nasopharynx

  • The nasopharynx lies at the centre of the head and is the part of the throat that connects to the nose.

  • Nearby structures are the nose, nasal sinuses, the Eustachian tube leading to the middle ear, and the base of the skull bone containing a few nerves that control sensation and movement of the eye and the face.

Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC)

The nasopharynx has a strong lymphatic link with the neck glands on both sides of the neck, so it is common for NPC to spread to the neck lymph nodes.
NPC has an exceptionally high occurrence rate in the coastal areas of south eastern China: the occurrence rate in Guangdong province is about 25 times higher than in the rest of the world. Given this, it is important for people in Hong Kong to be aware of the symptoms and risk factors for this type of cancer.
