What are the causes of corpus uteri cancer?

At the moment, the exact cause of corpus uteri cancer is not known. We do know a number of factors can increase your risk of developing the condition, including:

  • women over the age of 60, especially for post-menopausal women

  • women who have not given birth to children

  • obesity, especially post-menopausal women with abdominal obesity

  • women receiving oestrogen-only hormone replacement therapy (HRT), or on HRT after menopause

  • women with a prior diagnosis or with family history of breast cancer, ovarian cancer or colorectal cancer

  • women with polycystic ovary syndrome

  • women with endometrial hyperplasia

  • women with diabetes or with "3-Highs" (high blood pressure, high blood glucose and high cholesterol)

Symptoms of corpus uteri cancer

Early symptoms are not as obvious since other ill health conditions can cause the same symptoms.

  • unusual vaginal discharge e.g. bleeding in between normal periods or after menopause

Symptoms become more detectable at a later stage:

  • pain during intercourse or urinating

  • a mass can be felt in the lower abdomen
