Every two years, the Hong Kong Council of Social Service’s Best Practice Awards recognises good practice in the welfare sector in order to promote public awareness and enhance cross-service professional exchange and sharing of experiences.

For the past five years, Cancer Fund has been providing timely practical and emotional support to cancer patients who are unable to access care services because they live alone, lack social support or are physically too weak to care for themselves.

The free service offers practical, physical and emotional care to patients in their homes, delivered by a multi-disciplinary team of social workers, professional carers, clinical psychologists, nurses and supported from a group of committed and experienced volunteers. Practical assistance includes such things as helping patients shop for essential items, preparing meals or accompanying them to their medical appointments.

Pisa Lee, Senior Service Manager at Cancer Fund said, “Homecare is an integral part of our free cancer care support services and we’re extremely proud that our work has been recognised by the social service sector and community. It’s vital that no-one faces the cancer journey alone and our outreach service ensures that patients who can’t leave their homes easily are still able to access and receive emotional encouragement and practical care to better their recovery or time spent at home. This award is a testament to our professional staff and volunteers whose passion, care, and dedication are making a significant difference to peoples’ lives.”

In the last financial year, Cancer Fund helped 147 people receive essential support in their homes, with over two thousand visits taking place, and more than 100 volunteers providing quality services to patients.
