Q1

Can Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) progress to prostate cancer?

A. No, it cannot. About half of men over 50 experience Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), which is generally non-cancerous. An enlarged prostate can compress the urethra, leading to difficulty urinating. While prostate cancer can also cause urinary issues, it arises from the abnormal growth of prostate cells and may not necessarily lead to an enlarged prostate that compresses the urethra, meaning there may be no symptoms.

Q2

Can elderly prostate cancer patients avoid surgery?

A. If the cancer cells have not spread, there may be an opportunity for “active surveillance,” which involves continuous and regular monitoring of the condition along with managing any troubling symptoms. In such cases, surgery may not be necessary. Before deciding on a treatment plan, doctors will consider the tumour’s growth rate, extent of spread, the patient’s age, and overall health to provide the most appropriate options.

Q3

Will treatment for prostate cancer affect sexual life and fertility?

A. Different treatment plans come with various side effects, which can be temporary or permanent. For example, after complete removal of the prostate or radiotherapy treatment, the function of the prostate or seminal vesicles will cease, affecting fertility, although sexual activity can still continue. Before undergoing any treatment, it’s important to discuss potential side effects and share your expectations and concerns with your doctor.
