Dual Protection. Lifelong Prevention

Hong Kong Cancer Fund has been promoting public awareness of cervical cancer since 1998. As a result of our dedicated initiatives, there has been a prominent increase in women’s awareness towards cervical cancer and undertaking of screenings in recent years.

As a member of the Cervical Screening Task Force, we work in parallel with the government for the cervical screening programme introduced to Hong Kong in March 2004.

As cervical cancer continues to affect 500 new women each year, we will continue to educate women who are still unaware of the importance of cervical screenings.

Dual Protection. Life-long Prevention

In 2009, we began our partnership with GlaxoSmithKline Hong Kong to organise the “Dual Protection. Lifelong Prevention” campaign, a comprehensive cervical cancer education programme advocating the importance of dual protection; i.e. regular cervical screenings + the HPV vaccine injection. With the support of our Ambassador Ms. Kay Tse, this campaign incorporates media promotions, extensive community outreach and free screening services to the public in an effort to increase cervical screening rates in Hong Kong and awareness about the cervical cancer vaccine.

Through regular cervical screenings, women can detect changes/abnormalities in the cells of the cervix that can allow for treatment or observation before cervical cancer develops.

Combining the habit of regular screenings with the HPV vaccine, which helps to block major strains of the HPV virus that are responsive for the development of 70% of cervical cancer cases, women are better protected against the disease.

Cervical cancer is one of the few cancers that can be detected and treated early by undertaking regular screenings. Our Cervical Cancer Awareness Campaign serves to raise public awareness towards the value of dual protection, so that women will actively protect themselves from the risk of developing cervical cancer.

Please remember, “Dual Protection. Lifelong Prevention!” A regular pap test alongside vaccination can provide the best prevention against cervical cancer.
