ARE YOU FORCE-FEEDING PEOPLE TOBACCO?
Every year, second hand smoke kills more than 1,400 people and exposes many others to the risks of cancer. If you are a smoker, please be more considerate and stop forcing others to suffer in restaurants and public places.

The smoking ban in Hong Kong will not be taking effect until January 2007, and in the mean time, people are still suffering from passive smoking in restaurants and public places. The situation is particularly worrying for employees working in restaurants, bars and nightclubs.

Much effort was made by various organizations to persuade legislation to make all smoking indoors illegal by the middle of 2006, but due to ferocious protests from the industry, the smoking ban will not be in full effect until 2009.

Having anti-smoking legislation in these public places would help to create a better working environment for restaurant employees, and a much more pleasant eating environment for the public. Therefore, it is essential to educate the public on the issue. Through a mass media publicity campaign, we are hoping that smokers will refrain from smoking indoor for the benefits of other people and themselves.

This year's campaign features two striking visuals that show that fine foods do not mix with tobacco. The visuals can been seen around town in MTR stations, tram and bus shelters, publications and posters in many organizations, including food outlets. A 10-second commercial is also placed in UA cinemas prior to show times. If you are interested to join the many organizations that are already contributing their part to a smoke-free Hong Kong, please contact us at public@hkcf.org.
