EORTC stands for the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer. It is an international association with its headquarters in Belgium. It was founded as a cancer research organisation in 1962 with the intention to promote and co-ordinate high quality laboratory research and clinical trials. It also aims to provide a central facility with scientific expertise and administrative support for this network of scientists and clinical investigators. In March 2006, the EORTC Foundation changed its name to The EORTC Charitable Trust.
The organisation encompasses all aspects of cancer research, from laboratory research and new drug development to large phase III clinical trials. The network comprises more than 2,500 scientists and clinicians, all collaborating on a voluntary basis in about 30 multidisciplinary groups in 32 countries.
Hong Kong Cancer Fund works directly with the EORTC in funding the latest research in clinical trials together with other organisations and private donors. Each year, the EORTC will share their research findings with the oncology departments in both the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
