Skin cancer, like sunburn, is caused by overexposure to ultraviolet radiation. It forms when skin cells are damaged by UV penetrating the skin. UVA disrupts the cells' DNA, causing them to mutate and grow abnormally. If these mutant cells are not destroyed by the body's natural defense system, it can continue to develop into skin cancers. Skin cancers do run in the family, and it is not only limited to people with fair skin.

95% of people who get skin cancer are treated successfully if detected early.

What are the early warning signs?

A Asymmetry (normal moles are round and symmetrical)
B Border (skin cancers usually have uneven borders)
C Color (there may be varied shades of brown, tan, black, or even red and blue)
D Diameter (if the spot is larger that 6mm)
