| Seeing the urgent need for cancer support services outside the hospital setting, the first CancerLink Support Centre was established in 1997 in Wong Tai Sin, Kowloon. This is the first of its kind in Hong Kong and it serves as a bridge between the government hospitals and the community.
With over 22,000 new cases of cancer every year, CancerLink Wong Tai Sin soon became overloaded and a second support centre was urgently needed. With generous support from the public and the Urban Renewal Department which granted a concession rental rate for the premises, a second CancerLink was opened in Central in May 2006, to serve those living and working on Hong Kong Island.
Comprised of a team of dedicated social workers, oncology nurses, counsellors, therapists and trained volunteers, CancerLink gives hope and strength through its many services and programmes. It is also a forum for people to meet and share their experience of cancer.
In line with Cancer Fund's mission to ensure that "no one faces cancer alone", CancerLink pioneered the "Buddy System" with 14 cancer patient support groups under its umbrella. Well-trained and enthusiastic cancer survivors become "Buddies" to those who may need a trusting ear. Through regular training and close supervision by our cancer care specialists, the buddies help to relieve the anxieties of their peers and bring courage through experience sharing.
