The Shanghai Cancer Recovery Club was established in 1989. As a non-profit organization with over 8,000 members it offers psychological and spiritual support to patients who have completed necessary cancer treatments through its Shanghai Cancer Recovery School. Mainly run by volunteers, the School focuses on helping patients who are mainly referred by hospitals to speed up their recovery by offering a three-week interactive course. Through this course patients will have a thorough understanding of the causes, treatments and results of their illness. Medical professionals are invited to address issues such as "Chinese Medicine and Oncology", "Diet for Cancer", "Family Nursing", and so on. However, the Club has difficulty reaching patients inside the hospitals.

In late 2003, HKCF and representatives from Shanghai collaborated efforts to set up Cancer Patients' Resource Centers in local hospitals based on our model. Centres were planned for hospitals in Shanghai to establish a network of psychological and support services based on our CPRCs and CancerLink. Inspired by their enthusiasm and eagerness to help fellow cancer patients, HKCF has approved an initial amount of RMB500,000 (a matching funding with Shanghai Charity Foundation) to support this worthwhile project. Their initial plan was to set up five CPRC's in five different hospitals (Shanghai Renji Hospital, Shanghai East Hospital, Shanghai Lung Hua Hospital, Shanghai Rui Jin Hospital, Shanghai Chest Hospital). All these hospitals provide diagnosis, treatment and ward facilities for cancer patients. Two centres were opened in 2004 while another three are expected to open in the next 3 years after satisfactory evaluation of the first two centres.

In order to lay the foundation for smooth operation of the new CPRCs in Shanghai, five social workers within our network of support conducted a training session for 50 selected volunteers in June 2003. The training includes bedside counselling skills, self-help concepts, psychosocial issues and ward training.

In addition, a total of 46,880 cancer information booklets published by HKCF were shipped to the School in June 2004. The first two CPRCs (Shanghai Renji Hospital, Shanghai East Hospital) were officially opened on October 10, 2004.
