Breast cancer is the number one female cancer in Hong Kong. It affects 1 in 23 women and there are 2,000 new cases every year. The numbers are rising at an alarming rate with an increase of 79.5% between 1994 and 2004. It is also affecting younger women now.
Although breast cancer cannot be prevented, the good news is that it can be treated successfully if found early. Our education campaign aims at informing women throughout the community about the threat of breast cancer and the importance of being 'Breast Aware'. This means encouraging women to get to know how their breasts normally feel and if they notice a change they should immediately seek medical attention. The campaign puts together mass media, community outreach programmes and health talks that alert women to be aware of their breast health.
