Every year about 130 women die from cervical cancer, the eighth most common female cancer in Hong Kong. Cervical cancer can be easily prevented by conducting simple cervical screening (also known as the Pap test). All women who are aged between 25-64 and have ever had sex should have the test regularly. However about half of the women in Hong Kong have never taken this life saving test.
Since 1998, we have continued to promote public awareness of cervical cancer. In 2001, we began to partner with P&G Hong Kong to organize the "Six Minutes Protect a Life" campaign, a comprehensive health education programme that incorporates media promotions, extensive community outreach, physician education and free screening service to the public in an effort to increase screening rate in Hong Kong. This partnership has allowed us to bring the educational effort to a new level.
We lead a coalition of medical professionals and service providers to formulate public education strategies, and we work closely with the Government as an advisor for the cervical screening programme which was introduced in March 2004.
Through our dedicated effort there has been a prominent increase in women's awareness towards the disease in recent years. Screening rate has increased from 47% in 2000 to 59% in 2006.
